During the holidays, is a great time to give up a little bit of your time to help someone in need. We’ve all seen the bell ringers with Santa hats standing outside stores collecting donations or food drives at schools that give food to people in need. But, there’s lots of other ways to give this Holiday Season, right here in Omaha!

Places to volunteer in Omaha

Women’s Center for Advancement

At the Women’s Center for Advancement they are focused on helping women who are the survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to keep their children safe and grow strong. This non-profit organization offers an application for volunteers and accept donations of supplies like feminine products, clothing and winter coats.

Food Bank for the Heartland

The Food Bank for the Heartland’s goal is to eliminate hunger and provide emergency or supplemental food to the area of Nebraska and Western Iowa. One volunteer opportunity at this organization is to sign-up to serve meals to the homeless. The Food Bank for the Heartland accepts groups of three to 50 people.

Food Bank for the Heartland also accepts food and financial donations that help them provide the meals and services for our community.

Open Door Mission

The Open Door Mission is an organization that gives homeless men, women and children a warm place to eat and helps them get back on their own feet. A great way to get involved at the Open Door Mission, would be to help wrap gifts, unload diapers, be a turkey ‘N’ fixin’s attendant, a toy and joy personal shopper and more.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army’s goal is to do the most good for the most people. This includes offering multiple ways to volunteer. Ways to make an impact this Holiday season are to help people sign-up for the toy drive, adopt a family, make a donation to the organization or help parents pick out toys for their children for Christmas.

If that’s not festive enough for you, there is always an opportunity to wear a Santa hat and register to ring the bells for the Salvation Army.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

A charity that could use your help during the holidays is the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha. The Ronald McDonald House needs help gathering supplies like food products, household items and supplies for families.

Some other ways you can make a difference this holiday:

  1. Send a care package to military personnel overseas
  2. Spread Christmas cheer by caroling at local senior centers or hospitals
  3. Lend a hand to the local animal shelters
  4. Take an old purse or bag and fill it with items for the homeless
  5. Donate your children’s old winter clothing to schools

Remember, the holidays only come around once a year and these Omaha organizations need your help! It doesn’t matter how you choose to volunteer as long as you are making a difference! So why not join your community today?
